Morning everyone,
Today’s workplace safety topic is footwear and why appropriate shoes matter in a retail environment.
Because we work around stock movement, ladders, freight, sharp objects, heavy items, wet floors, and constant walking, footwear is an important part of workplace safety — not just uniform presentation.
A few reminders:
• Shoes should be enclosed and appropriate for retail work
• Footwear should provide reasonable grip and support
• Damaged or unsafe footwear should be replaced
• Be mindful that slippery soles increase risk around wet floors and back rooms
• Different departments may have different risks depending on stock and equipment handled
Examples:
• A dropped battery, dive weight, chain, or heavy camping item can cause serious injury to exposed feet
• Slippery footwear around freshly mopped floors or wet areas increases fall risk
• Poor support during long shifts can contribute to fatigue and strain
We also understand there can occasionally be medical or temporary exceptions relating to footwear. If this applies to you, please communicate with management so it can be discussed appropriately rather than assumed.
Task/discussion:
• What types of hazards around the store make proper footwear important?
• Are there any areas where footwear risks are higher?
• Is everyone aware of what is considered appropriate footwear for their department?
The goal isn’t to police people unnecessarily — it’s simply reducing avoidable injuries and making sure footwear matches the work being done.
