FIRE EVACUATION PROCEDURE – KARRATHA ADVENTURE SPORTS
In the event of a fire, all staff must remain calm, stop what they are doing, and begin evacuating the building immediately via the nearest safe exit. While exiting, staff must ensure that their coworkers and customers are also leaving the building. Do not collect personal belongings.
The most senior manager on site becomes the Person in Charge and is responsible for directing the evacuation. They must immediately assign key roles and ensure emergency services are contacted.
If available, the microphone should be used to make the following announcement:
“This is an emergency evacuation. Please leave the building immediately via the nearest exit and proceed to the assembly area.”
This announcement should be repeated as needed, while staff give clear, calm verbal directions to customers.
The Person in Charge must ensure someone is assigned to call 000 using either the shop phone or a mobile phone.
Staff must then quickly sweep the building:
-
Upstairs areas including the fishing department, office, and mezzanine must be cleared.
-
Downstairs areas including marine, camping, diving and sports, front counter/tills, kitchen/tearoom, and bathrooms must be cleared. Bathroom doors must be knocked on loudly to check for occupants.
All remaining staff must assist in moving customers toward exits and ensuring no one is left behind. Each area should be checked once, quickly and thoroughly, before exiting.
While evacuating, staff must walk quickly but not run, and must not turn back. Doors should be closed behind you where safe to do so, as this helps slow the spread of fire.
Before opening any door, check it by feeling the door and handle. If it is hot, do not open it and take an alternative route. If smoke is encountered, stay low to the ground and crawl, using walls for guidance if needed.
Once outside, all staff and customers must proceed directly to the designated assembly point. Everyone must remain there and not re-enter the building until instructed by the fire brigade or the Person in Charge that it is safe to do so. Any injuries must be reported immediately.
Person in charge must do a headcount of staff.
If you are unable to evacuate, you must alert others to your location by phone or by signalling from a window. Stay low to the ground, keep doors closed, and block any gaps with cloth if possible to prevent smoke entering. Cover your mouth with a cloth and remain as calm as possible. If your clothing catches fire, immediately stop, drop, and roll to extinguish the flames.
At all times, staff must remember: do not just leave — ensure others are out. Customers are the most unfamiliar with our store, and once you are out of the building, you must stay out.
