KDCCI Careers Expo- Why Retail Still Matters

Earlier this month, I set up a table at the KDCCI Careers Expo. Among the mining giants, healthcare providers, and law enforcement booths, we stood as the sole retail business. Considering the number of retail stores in town, it was surprising, but perhaps not unexpected.

Setting up for events like this isn't easy for small businesses. Time is scarce, and stepping away from daily operations is challenging. But I'm glad we made the effort.

Retail is the heartbeat of our community. We're the ones who help you find the right gear, share local tips, and ensure you're ready for your next adventure. We're the storytellers, the problem-solvers, and the friendly faces behind the counter. Not all of us are chatterboxes (thankfully), but we all play a vital role.

For us, this kind of connection matters. When you run a local business, being part of the community isn’t just a nice to have, it’s essential. It’s easy to overlook the role retail plays, but when we show up, listen, and support what’s happening around us, that’s where the real impact is made.

At the expo, we tried to bring some fun. Our lure casting game broke pretty quickly (back to the drawing board on that one), but nearly 50 students participated in our on-camera Q&A, testing out our YouTube/podcast gear. It was a blast watching them interview each other, and we're excited to share those clips soon (once life gives me a moment to edit them). Congratulations to Ferne, who won our prize pack!

Students from various Pilbara schools attended, including years 9 to 12. It was inspiring to see their enthusiasm and curiosity. Events like these remind us why we do what we do and the importance of engaging with the next generation.

Thanks to KDCCI for organizing such a fantastic event. If any students we met are reading this, feel free to drop by the store for a chat- we're always here to help and share a yarn.
